Getting Started
How do I set up Choretastic! for my family?
- Download Choretastic! on the parent's iPhone or iPad (requires iOS 17+).
- Create an account using email, Sign in with Apple, or Sign in with Google.
- Follow the setup wizard to create your family and add your first child.
- Create chores and assign screen time rewards.
- On your child's device, download Choretastic! and tap "This is a Kid's Device" to link it.
How do I link my child's device?
On the parent device, go to your child's profile and tap "Link Device." A 6-character link code will appear. On the child's device, open Choretastic!, tap "This is a Kid's Device," and enter the code. The code expires after 15 minutes for security.
Can both parents use the app?
Yes. Open Family from the dashboard and tap "Invite Parent" to generate a join code. The other parent downloads Choretastic!, creates an account, and joins your family with the code. Both parents have full access to manage chores, approve tasks, and view reports.
Chores & Rewards
How do chores earn screen time?
When you create a chore, you assign a screen time reward (e.g., 30 minutes). When your child completes the chore and you approve it, the screen time is automatically added to their balance. Their device enforces the balance using Apple's Screen Time API.
Can I create recurring chores?
Yes. When creating a chore, select "Daily" or "Weekly" frequency. Daily chores reset every day, and weekly chores reset on the day you choose. Recurring chores also contribute to streak tracking.
What is photo verification?
When submitting a chore, kids can take a photo as proof of completion. You'll see the photo when reviewing the chore for approval. This eliminates the "I already did it" problem.
What are streaks?
Streaks track how many days in a row a child completes their chores. Longer streaks unlock milestone badges, motivating consistent effort.
How does the wishlist work?
Kids can add items to their wishlist from their device. Parents see wishlist items and can create rewards based on them. When a child earns enough points, they can request a reward redemption for parent approval.
Screen Time
How does screen time enforcement work?
Choretastic! uses Apple's native Screen Time API (Family Controls framework) to enforce limits directly on your child's device. When their screen time balance reaches zero, selected apps are blocked. When they earn more time by completing chores, apps are unblocked automatically. This is real enforcement, not an honor system.
What are Schedule Profiles?
Schedule Profiles let you set automatic restrictions:
- Bedtime blocks: Block apps during sleeping hours.
- School-hour restrictions: Limit access during school time.
- Daily limits: Set a maximum daily screen time allowance.
These are enforced automatically on-device, even when the parent app is closed.
Does it work when the child is offline?
Yes. Once screen time rules are set on the child's device, Apple's Screen Time API enforces them locally, no internet connection required. The balance syncs with the server when the device comes back online.
Why do I need to authorize Family Controls?
Apple requires explicit authorization from the device owner (parent/Family Organizer) before any app can manage Screen Time. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized control. You'll be prompted during setup so just tap "Allow" to enable it.
Location & Safety
How does location tracking work?
When enabled by the parent, the child's device shares its location with the family. You can see real-time location on a map in the parent app. Location uses a combination of GPS and significant location changes for battery efficiency.
What are geofences / safe zones?
You can set up geofences (virtual boundaries) around locations like home, school, or a friend's house. When your child's device enters or leaves a geofence, you receive an alert. This helps you know when they arrive safely or leave unexpectedly.
Does location tracking drain my child's battery?
Choretastic! uses significant location changes and region monitoring instead of continuous GPS tracking. This is much more battery-efficient. Most families see minimal battery impact.
Subscription & Account
How much does Choretastic! cost?
Choretastic! offers a 7-day free trial with full access to all features. After the trial:
- Monthly: $5.99/month
- Annual: $49.99/year (save 30%)
Both plans include unlimited family members, all features, and no ads.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through Apple. To cancel:
- Open Settings on your device.
- Tap your name at the top, then "Subscriptions."
- Find Choretastic! and tap "Cancel Subscription."
You'll keep access until the end of your current billing period.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings in the app and scroll to the bottom. Tap "Delete Account." This permanently removes your account, all family data, child profiles, chore history, and uploaded photos. This action cannot be undone. Make sure to cancel your subscription separately through Apple.
Can I restore my subscription on a new device?
Yes. Sign in with the same Apple ID, then go to Settings and tap "Restore Purchases." Your subscription will be restored automatically.
Troubleshooting
Screen time enforcement isn't working
Check the following:
- The child's device must have Choretastic! installed and linked.
- Family Controls must be authorized. Look for the Screen Time permission in the child's device settings.
- The parent must be the Family Organizer in Apple's Family Sharing.
- The child's device must be running iOS 17 or later.
If it's still not working, try unlinking and re-linking the device.
I'm not receiving notifications
Make sure notifications are enabled:
- Open Settings > Notifications > Choretastic!.
- Ensure "Allow Notifications" is turned on.
- Check that Banners and Sounds are enabled.
Also try signing out and back in to refresh your notification token.
The app is stuck on a loading screen
Try these steps:
- Force-close the app and reopen it.
- Check your internet connection.
- If on a kid device, make sure the device is still linked (the link code hasn't been revoked by a parent).
